The method involves authorizing an automatic shutdown when necessary conditions are satisfied, where the necessary conditions consist of an estimation (C0rpm) of an engine torque produced by a rotary electric machine (1) and another estimation (C0mot) of another engine torque necessary for starting a thermal engine of a car. The former torque estimation is proportional to an estimated stator current during the starting process. Stator resistance is estimated depending on an estimated stator temperature (Tstator) based on a worse case estimator or an operation model. The rotary electric machine is designed as an alterno-starter.
