A method of insulating liquid stored in a tank with an open top comprises providing a plurality of insulation members, each insulation member configured to float on the liquid, and placing the insulation members onto a surface of the liquid. Heated water is provided at a remote petroleum well site for a fracking operation by erecting a tank with an open top and pouring water into the tank. When a water level in the tank reaches a selected level, water heating begins and insulation members are placed onto a surface of the water until at least a major portion of the surface is covered by insulation members. Water continues to pour into the tank until the water level in the tank reaches a desired level; and heating continues as required to achieve and maintain a desired water temperature.
