A process to improve the handle of fabrics comprising synthetic polyester filaments in their drawn condition consists in treating the fabric with a solution containing a caustic alkali and either cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide or lauryl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. Preferably there is used an aqueous solution containing 0,5-5% caustic soda and 0,005-0,5% of the quaternary ammonium salt at 80 DEG -110 DEG C. Examples are given and these include comparative experiments in which aqueous caustic soda solutions containing dimethyl phenyl benzyl ammonium chloride, cetyl pyridinium bromide, tetramethyl ammonium bromide, triethyl benzyl ammonium bromide, triethyl methyl ammonium iodide, dimethyl phenyl ammonium bromide and trimethyl phenyl ammonium bromide are used. An apparatus with which the treatment may be accomplished is described. Specification 652,948 is referred to.ALSO:A process to improve the handle of fabrics comprising synthetic polyester filaments in their drawn condition consists in treating the fabric with a solution containing a caustic alkali and either cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide or lauryl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. An apparatus with which the treatment may be accomplished comprises an alkali- and corrosion-resistant perforated beam on which the fabric is wound, a pump for pumping the caustic solution through the perforations in the beam to percolate the fabric, means for recirculating the solution comprising a pump and pressure measuring means between the pump and the perforated beam for measuring the pressure drop of the solution, indicating the loss in weight of the fabric.
