A vehicle comprising a closed-loop electric power assisted steering (EPAS) system 10 comprising a control unit 30 configured to compute an artificial friction component and to compute a desired reference torque incorporating the artificial friction component, wherein the artificial friction component is dependent upon steering wheel angle. Also claimed is: a closed loop electric power assisted steering system; a programmable unit for use in a closed loop electric power assisted steering system; a method of determining a desired reference torque by collecting data at least relating to vehicle speed, steering wheel velocity, driver applied torque and steering wheel angle, computing an artificial friction that is dependent upon steering wheel angle and computing a desired reference torque based upon the collected data and the artificial friction; and a program for a computerised control of an electric power assisted steering system. |
