<p>A lift system comprises a rail 1, a carriage assembly 2, drive means 3 coupled to the carriage assembly 2 and adapted to engage the rail 1 and drive the carriage assembly 2 along the rail 1, levelling means 4 operable to adjust an orientation of the carriage assembly 2 with respect to the rail 1, the carriage assembly comprising a seat or platform 21 for a person, an accelerometer 22a providing an output signal indicative of an inclination of the seat or platform 21 with respect to a horizontal plane and control means 23 receiving the output signal and controlling the levelling means 4 to maintain the inclination of the seat or platform 21 substantially at a predetermined value or within a predetermined range. Alternatively the system may comprise control means 23 arranged to control the drive means 3 and control the speed at which the drive means 3 drives the carriage assembly 2 along the rail 1 according to position along the rail 1 using signals from a rail slope indicating means 5 and a rail curvature indicating means (6 fig. 3).</p> |
