<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved obturator assembly. <P>SOLUTION: An optical obturator 100 for penetrating tissue includes an outer member 104 defining a longitudinal axis (a) and having a proximal end 110 and a distal end 112, a front member disposed adjacent the distal end of the outer member and having an optical window adapted to permit passage of light therethrough for detection by a clinician, and a penetrating member mounted adjacent the front member and having a penetrating surface adapted to facilitate penetrating of tissue. The front member is adapted for longitudinal movement between a first longitudinal position and a second longitudinal position.
