[Class 135.] A gate valve for use at the end of a culvert has small and large flap valves which rest on inclined seatings so that a small discharge area is provided for a small head of water and a large discharge area for a large head of water. A flap 1 which controls the large discharge area rests on the inclined face 9 of a cylindrical frame 3, a flange 5 on which is attached to the culvert wall 6 by bolts. The flap 1 may also be mechanically operated by a chain attached to a rod passing through, lugs 21. The flap 1'is hinged by means of a web 24 passing between horns 31 and furnished with journals 25 resting on a fixed member 30. The face 9 and the flap 1 are circular in outline to facilitate manufacture and the portion of the flap opposite the face 9 has a dove-tailed recess containing a packing ring. A flap valve 2 which can be maintained open by only a small head of water is supported by members 37, 37a similar to those of the flap 1, but formed integrally with the frame and the flap-respectively. The members 24, 30 may be formed of steel and the frame 3 and flap 1 of cast iron. Specification 242,087, [Class 135, Valves &c.], is referred to.
