PURPOSE: A water pump driving device for cooling an engine and an operating method thereof are provided to cool the engine by operating an electromotive water pump, and maintain the predetermined temperature of the engine. CONSTITUTION: A water pump driving device(20) for cooling an engine comprises a motor driving unit(21), a power supply unit(22), a communication unit(23), a temperature sensing unit(24), and a control unit(25). The power supply unit supplies power from a battery to the motor driving unit. The communication unit receives a control signal for operating a motor by communicating with a main control unit. The temperature sensing unit senses the temperature of cooling water. The control unit operates the motor on the basis of the control signal when the temperature of the cooling water is above a first reference temperature. The control unit controls the motor driving unit in order that the motor is operated until the temperature of the cooling water is below a second reference temperature.
