A method for applying a coating to a surface comprising providing a sprayable liquid binding agent formed of first and second components, pumping the first and second components of the binding agent to a first dispensing device (13) and combining the first and second components in the first dispensing device (13) to form the binding agent. The method further comprises spraying the binding agent from the first dispensing device (13) on to a surface to be coated (32), providing a particulate medium, and spraying the particulate medium from a second dispensing device (37) into the liquid spray of binding agent produced by the first dispensing device (13). The binding agent coating the particulate medium and adhering it to the surface (32) to form a coating thereon. An apparatus for performing the method is also described.
