APPLICATION OF L-N-BUTYLPHTHALIDE TO PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF DEMENTIA

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing and treating dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.

SOLUTION: Optically-active L-n-butylphthalide is represented by formula (I). The L-n-butylphthalide is obtained by first chemically synthesizing a racemic body of n-butylphthalide and chemically dividing the racemic body into two structural components in order to produce a levorotatory isomer of the n-butylphthalide. An effective dosage of the L-n-butylphthalide for the treatment is 0.1-100 mg/kg/day.
