<p>Perfluoroheptyl-methyl methacrylate is prepared from methacrylic acid and C7F15CH2OH.ALSO:The invention comprises polymers of per-fluoroheptyl-methyl methacrylate containing <FORM:1045896/C3/1> as the repeating unit. These may be produced by known emulsion polymerization techniques from the monomer, and may be used for treating fibrous materials (see Division D1), e.g. in solution in fluorinated organic solvents such as trifluoromethyl benzene, bis-(trifluoromethyl) benzene and methyl perfluoroacetate.ALSO:Cotton, paper and leather are treated with a polymer of perfluoroheptyl-methyl methacrylate (see Division C3), and the treated material maintained at a temperature up to 190 DEG C. to obtain a fluorine content of 0.05-5%. The polymer may be applied by padding from aqueous emulsion or solution in a fluorinated organic solvent such as trifluoromethyl benzene, bis-(trifluoromethyl) benzene and methyl perfluoroacetate. The material treated is thereby rendered repellent to water, oil, soiling and staining.</p> |
