Packed tower (1), preferably for the absorption of water or sulfur trioxide in sulfuric acid, comprises a bed of packaged materials supported on a domed grate (7), through which the sulfuric acid trickles from above, a gas supply pipe (5) provided in the lower region of the tower, a gas outlet provided above the bed, and an acid outlet (4) provided in the lower region of the tower. The domed grate is supported on a L-shaped ring such that a gap is formed between the outer diameter of the domed grate and a mantle (2) of the packed tower.
