<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for producing an optical fiber preform, which only has a structure to support weight of a glass preform, however, falling of the glass preform can be prevented even when a crack occurs on the glass preform, and with which downsizing and simplification of the apparatus configuration are made attainable. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus for producing the optical fiber preform is equipped with: an air cylinder 3 which is attached to a portion below a chuck part based on an apparatus chuck 2 to chuck the upper end portion of the glass preform 101; and a load cell 4 which is attached to a frame body of the apparatus chuck 2 and with which a load of the air cylinder 3 related to the frame body is measured. When a crack 105 occurs on the glass preform 101, a load due to the weight of the glass preform 101 is applied to the load cell 4, and occurrence of the crack 105 is detected by observing a load value applied to the load cell 4 getting to be equal to a prescribed value or more, and the glass preform 101 is held with the air cylinder 3 before the glass preform 101 starts falling. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
