The method involves transferring backup identifying information from one of components (BG1-BGn) to a configuration device (PG) if a configuring data set associated with identifying information is not provided or retrieved, where the backup identifying information marks the component. The component is suitable for operating the configuring data set stored and associated with another component. A control device (CPU) is configured to use the configuring data set associated with the backup identifying information for operating the two components. An independent claim is also included for a component for operating with a control device in an industrial automation device.
