According to various embodiments, a tracheal tube ventilating device includes a sealing portion (16) near a distal end (20) of the tube. The sealing portion has an electroactive polymer configured to undergo a clinically effective change in volume, thickness, or both upon application of an electrical potential. Such a change in volume, thickness, or both enables sealing of the device against an inner surface of a trachea while permitting the free passage of ventilating gas through the tube. In addition, at least one electrical conductor (28) is coupled to the electroactive polymer and is configured to apply the electrical potential. |
