The substrate (10) has an aluminum film (12) for producing photovoltaic cells (30). A side of the aluminum film is provided for arranging a photovoltaic-absorber layer (18). A protective layer (16) of silicon-based sol-gel paint is arranged on another side of the aluminum film. The aluminum film is high-gloss rolled and electrolytically polished on a side for obtaining surface roughness of less than 50 nanometers. The protective layer exhibits thickness between 0.5 and 4 micrometers. The aluminum film is made of aluminum or aluminum alloy.
