PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolyte for an electric double layer capacitor that has heat resistance enough for reflow soldering, and whose discharge capacity is not impaired even when a voltage is continuously applied, and maintained even in a low-temperature environment, and the electric double layer capacitor using the same. SOLUTION: A storage container 2 in which a positive electrode can 12 and a negative electrode can 22 are hermetically encapsulated via a gasket 40 contains a pair of polarizable electrodes disposed opposite each other across a separator 30 and the electrolyte 50 prepared by dissolving supporting salt in a nonacqueous solvent, which includes sulfolane and a low-melting-point solvent of ≤-40°C in melting point.
