A method of inspecting a component 8 such as a turbine blade situated within an engine, the component comprising a wall having a first side and a second side, comprises inserting a light emitter 22 into the engine adjacent the first side of the wall in a region where a hole extending through the wall from the first side to the second side is nominally located; emitting light to induce light to pass through the hole; deploying a light detector 28 adjacent the second side of the wall in the path of light issuing from the hole, the detector being sensitive to at least the wavelength(s) of light being emitted; and assessing the condition of the hole in dependence on the response of the detector. Borescope type devices may be used to insert the emitter and detector. |
