The present invention discloses a method for instructing enabling/disabling Forward Error Correction (FEC) coding function. The method includes that the instruction identifier of FEC coding status is preset (201); an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) correspondingly transmits the instruction identifier of FEC coding status of each Optical Network Unit (ONU) and the own Identity (ID) of each ONU (202); each ONU enables or disables its own FEC coding function according to the received instruction identifier corresponding to its own ID (203). The present invention also discloses a system for instructing enabling/disabling FEC coding function, which includes an OLT and ONUs. Application of the method and system of the present invention can solve the problem caused by error code that ONUs cannot determine the instruction from an OLT.
