The column has a casing unit (2) for mounting a steering shaft (1) around longitudinal axis (4). The casing unit is connected to a support part via a breakaway connection and an energy absorption connection, which includes a bending wire. The wire is deformed during movement of the unit with respect to the support part. The wire is elastically deformed between the unit and the support part when the breakaway connection is closed, and pretensions the unit with respect to the support part when the unit is moved parallel to longitudinal axis of the steering shaft toward vehicle front. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a steering column for a motor vehicle.
