The rotating actuator has a rotary knob (1), where a status of a system is changed by the rotation of the rotary knob and the rotary knob rotates in limitless manner. An optical display unit is assigned to the rotating actuator, which optically represents the system status as angular range based on the starting position. The starting position for the optical representation of the system status is independent of the initial position of the rotary knob. An independent claim is also included for a multi-function device with a unit for identifying the system adjusted and represented by the rotating actuator.
