A benzoxazole of formula <FORM:0778988/VI/1> wherein R represents a halomethyl or 1 to 4 carbon alkyl is administered to animals to control parasitic diseases of gastro intestinal tract especially coccidiosis. 35 to 2000 mg. of benzoxazole per kilogram body weight is used. Concentrates contain 5 to 95 per cent by weight of the benzoxazole, a poultry feed 0.01 to 0.4 per cent. Liquid preparations are (a) solutions in an innocuous ingestible liquid such as alcohol or an edible oil, e.g. coconut, olive, cottonseed or peanut; (b) dispersions in water with a dispersing agent such as glycerol, sorbitan esters of fatty acids, polyoxyalkylene derivatives of fatty alcohols and sorbitan esters; (c) aqueous emulsions in which the benzoxazole is dissolved in an edible oil. Solid preparations are obtained by mixing the benzoxazole with an edible solid such as aluminium magnesium silicate; fullers' earth or bentonite and may be in the form of tablets or capsules or may be incorporated in the animal feed. An animal feed may be medicated by adding to the feed a solution of benzoxazole in a solvent such as alcohol, acetone or methylene chloride and drying to remove the solvent. Specified benzoxazoles are 2 - methyl - 5, 7 - dinitrobenzoxazole, 2 - ethyl - 5, 7 - dinitrobenzoxazole and 2 - propyl - 5, 7 - dinitrobenzoxazole. |
