<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a damping force control device capable of preventing the occurrence of hunting of switching operation of the damping force characteristic stage number by a valve. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An intermediate band is set between adjacent damping force characteristics among damping force characteristics of a damper switched stepwise by the valve 31. When request damping force belongs to the intermediate band, the request stage number is uniformly set in any one of two stage numbers of expressing the adjacent damping force characteristics of sandwiching its intermediate band. Thus, when the request damping force shifts in the central vicinity of the two damping force characteristics, the request damping force becomes damping force belonging to the intermediate band, and the request stage number does not change by a variation in its shift.
