The present invention provides a method for the fermentative production of compactin, lovastatin, pravastatin or simvastatin comprising culturing a host, preferably a filamentous fungus, comprising one of the transcription regulator genes having SEQ ID NO 23, SEQ ID NO 26, SEQ ID NO 27 and SEQ ID NO 28. Furthermore, the invention provides a host for the production of above mentioned statins comprising one of said transcription regulators.
