<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic chain tensioner capable of preventing air from being remained in a plunger cylinder, by simple structure, even when an engine is stopped and stands for a long period, and capable of preventing an unfamiliar sound from being generated by flapping of a timing chain when starting the engine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This hydraulic chain tensioner 6 includes a plunger 28 for pressing the timing chain, a housing 27 communicated with a housing cylinder 27a and having a hydraulic supply passage 27b for supplying oil pressure, and a rachet mechanism 38 for allowing pressing-directional movement of the plunger 28, and for deterring the plunger 28 from moving along a direction reverse to a pressing direction. The plunger 28 has the plunger cylinder 28a communicated with the housing cylinder 27a and supplied with the oil pressure, and includes an air remaining preventive member 31 arranged in an air remaining space in an inside of the plunger cylinder 28a, and for preventing the air from being remained in the plunger cylinder 28a.
