<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a receiver including a squelch means capable of accurately setting the operation of a squelch circuit in accordance with an operational environment. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A squelch control circuit 20 of the receiver extracts a sound signal from a reception signal by a sound signal extraction part 21 and extracts a noise signal from the reception signal by a noise signal extraction part 31. The level of the extracted sound signal is calculated by a sound level calculation part 22, and the average value of the sound level is calculated by a moving average calculation part 23. The level of the extracted noise signal is calculated by a noise level calculation part 32, and the average value of the noise level is calculated by a moving average calculation part 33. The sound level average value is compared with the noise level average value by a comparison part 24, a squelch on/off-switch 14 is turned on when the sound level average value is larger than the noise level average value, and the squelch on/off-switch 14 is turned off when the sound level average value is smaller than the noise level average value to cut off the output of the sound signal.
