The method involves measuring period of a row tooth preceding a long tooth and period of another row tooth preceding the former tooth. Period of false row teeth is estimated by adding a corrective term that is function of difference between the period of the former tooth and the period of the latter tooth, to the period of the former tooth. The difference is multiplied by a correction factor that is function of an angular position of an internal combustion engine at the end of the period of the former tooth and an angular position of the engine at the end of the period of the latter tooth.
