The method involves monitoring a network with a measuring device (11) which is provided with a dynamic metric. The measuring device is controlled and the attack is determined with a control device (12). The metric has a base metric and an amplified metric, where a monitoring task is provided with the control device when a change in the distributed denial of the service attacks, is determined. The amplified metric is interpreted on the basis of a metric definition (15) with the measuring device. The measuring device is reconfigured with the base metric and the amplified metric. An independent claim is included for a system for determining the distributed denial of service attacks by a packet-based network.
