[Also in Divisions B4 and B5] Apparatus for cutting an elongate web 1, Fig. 5, of fabric or metal foil into strips for use in making vehicle tyres, comprises means to move the web longitudinally, means for moving spaced cutters across the web at an angle to the direction of movement of the web, the angle being varied to vary the width of the strips. As described, the web 1 is supported on an endless belt conveyer 5 which is driven at a constant speed around end rollers 6 and over a tensioning roller 7 by a motor 8, Fig. 6, and chain 9. A support member 2 for the cutters 3 is movable on wheels 10 on arcuate rails 11. The cutters 3 are mounted on chains 17 so that they pass over and cut the surface of the material in their lower flight. The chains are driven by the motor 8 via a variable drive transmission 20 which permits variation of the cutting angle, and a chain drive 22. Alternatively, separate synchronized motors are provided for the conveyer and cutter chains 17. The cutters 3 are driven by a motor 16 and chain 18, Fig. 11. Each cutter comprises a blade 44 driven from the chain 18 via gearing and shafts 46 . . . 49 and working in conjunction with a cutter plate 50 a cutter housing 41 being pivotable to adjust the cutting angle. To cut wide strips some e.g. alternate, cutters may be removed or pivoted out of engagement. Shears, saws or flame cutters may be used for cutting the web in place of discs.</p> |
