The method involves starting a vehicle by a starter device. Actual rotary speed characteristics (12) of an engine are determined. A determination is made whether the actual rotary speed characteristics deviates from a reference point by determining whether the actual rotary speed characteristics reaches a pre-determined rotary speed threshold (10) within a pre-determined permissible time interval (deltaT1). The starter device is determined to be faulty when the actual rotary speed characteristics deviate from a reference point. An independent claim is also included for a device for recognition of a faulty starter device in a vehicle.
