The invention relates to an operational method and design of a ship propulsion system with a large marine diesel engine (1) driving a propeller shaft that is connected to a generator (5), wherein the exhaust gas not needed by at least one turbo charger is fed to an exhaust gas turbine (11) after leaving the diesel of the ship.
