PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tunneling machine capable of performing rectangular tunneling without being restricted by the geological conditions of natural ground. SOLUTION: This tunneling machine 1 comprises a cutter head 10 rotated about the axis of a tunnel, a cylindrical body section 20 which is disposed at the rear of the cutter head 10 and which has a means for driving the cutter head 10, a chamber 30 formed between the cutter head 10 and the cylindrical body section 20, and a plurality of cutting bits 40, 40... moving forward and backward in the tunneling direction.
