<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically create a table of contents page and to provide room for designating its appearance. <P>SOLUTION: In a document processing apparatus, settings that are referenced in the case of automatically generating a table of contents page include a table of contents document size 1402, document direction 1403, ineffectiveness 1404 of settings for the overall document, selection 1407 of initial symbols, page numbers 1408 to be employed, presence/absence 1409 of lead lines, and selection 1411 of chapters to be displayed in the table of contents.
