PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent damage of a machine or an operator due to the scattering of a workpiece, and to prevent an abnormal motion of the workpiece. SOLUTION: This machine tool is provided with: a gripping means for gripping a workpiece; a main shaft equipped with the gripping means, and movable along the axial direction; a monitoring means for monitoring the projecting length of the non-restrained section of the workpiece gripped by the gripping means on the basis of the position information of the main shaft; a determination means for determining whether to execute prescribed warning processing and/or stop processing on the basis of a criterion composed of at least the projecting length monitored by the monitoring means; and an abnormality handling means for executing the warning processing and/or stop processing according to the determination result by the determination means.
