PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for controlling an exhaust gas recirculation EGR system 107.

SOLUTION: This method and the system can incorporate one or a plurality of devices for continuously monitoring an exhaust stream 170 on a toxic component. This method and the system can control a component of the EGR system 107 based on the concentration of the toxic component in the exhaust stream 170.
