Provided is a back light (or an illuminating device) (2) comprising a plurality of light sources (5), a plurality of light guide elements (7, 17, - - -) for surface-emitting lights from the light sources (5), and a diffusion plate (8) arranged at a spacing from and confronting the light guide elements (7, 17, - - -), for diffusing the lights emitted from the light guide elements (7, 17, - - -). Each of the light guide elements (7, 17, - - -) includes a light emitting portion (7b) having a light emitting face (7a), and a light guide portion (7c) for guiding the light from the light source (5) to the light emitting portion (7b), and is arranged such that, on the light guide portion (7c) of one light guide element (7), there rides the light emitting portion (17b) of the other light guide element (7) adjacent to that one light guide element (7). A light quantity adjusting portion (11) for reducing the quantity of the light received is arranged at a spacing from the diffusion plate (8) such that the orthogonal projection of the light quantity adjusting portion (11) on the light emitting region covers the boundaries between the individual light guide elements (7, 17, - - -). As a result, the illuminating device of the tandem type can improve the homogeneity of brightness better. |
