PURPOSE:To provide a separator for alkali accumulator with excellent retention of electrolyte and large mechanical strength by using a separator which consists of unwoven cloth made from synthetic resin fiber of polyolefin type and which has different hydrophilic properties on the front and rear sides. CONSTITUTION:The surface of polypropylene fiber is oxidized by corona discharge only on a single side of a polypropylene nonwoven fabric, to give it hydrophilic property. Using this separator a sealed Ni-Cd accumulator is accomplished, in which the side given hydrophilic property contacts the positive electrode plate. Under an atmosphere at 45 deg.C, for ex., 100 reversals of 4hr. charging with 0.3c current and 45min. discharging with 1c current are made, followed by dismantle of the accumulator and measurement of the amount of electrolyte in the separator, which has yielded a result that the electrolyte retaining ability of the separator after charge/discharge cycles is equal to nylon nonwoven fabric and the mechanical strength is much higher than the same. |
