PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mercury-free metal halide lamp having a long service life by preventing separation of metal foil and quartz glass and a crack of the quartz glass adjacent to the metal foil and by improving the reliability of a sealing part. SOLUTION: In this mercury-free metal halide lamp, a discharge space is filled with a rare gas and a metal halide, and starting power larger than rated power is applied in a rising period from startup. The mercury-free metal halide lamp is designed so that, when it is assumed that the length of a part of an electrode 3 embedded in the sealing part and the cross-sectional area of the sealing part in a part where the electrode is embedded are L and S, respectively, an inequality of P/(L×S)≤1.6, where P is preset starting power, is satisfied.
