PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure a disk carrying area and to reduce drive force when elevating and lowering a pickup. SOLUTION: The recording medium drive has a base unit 22 provided with a disk rotating mechanism 24 attached to a base chassis 27, an optical pickup for recording and reproducing the optical disk and a moving mechanism of the optical pickup, and the base chassis 27 is supported by a device main body so as to be freely elevated and lowered in a direction orthogonal to the surface direction of the optical disk. The base chassis 27 is disposed from the almost center of the device main body to one corner part on the back surface side in an optical disk inserting/removing direction and is supported so as to be freely turned roughly in the middle of the back surface of the device main body and roughly in the middle of one side face. The disk rotating mechanism 24 can be elevated and lowered in a direction roughly orthogonal to the optical disk inserting/removing direction, and a line connecting supports 16 and 17 supporting the base chassis 27 is roughly in contact with the outer periphery of the optical disk carried to the device main body.
