PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new ionic organic compound and a method for manufacturing it with a simple process, and to provide a hydrogelling agent comprising the resultant organic compound and a hydrogel using this hydrogelling agent and also, as a medium, water or an acidic aqueous solution. SOLUTION: The ionic organic compound is prepared by the condensation reaction of (A) 1,y-bis[4-(chloromethyl)benzamide] benzene (y is 2, 3 or 4) or 1,z-bisäN'-[4-(chloromethyl)phenyl]ureido}benzene (z is 2, 3 or 4) and (B) a compound selected from an N,N,N',N'-tetramethylalkylene diamine, which may have a 1-6C substituent between nitrogen atoms, or 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, which may have a substituent.
