METHOD OF DEMAPPING DATA SYMBOLS FOR DECODING IN A WIRED COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

Soft demapper for use in decoding of data symbol received through a wired communication path. The soft demapper receives a series of data symbols of information bits that are mapped in an I-Q plane, transmitted through a wired communication path, and equalized. The demapper calculates a likelihood for each of the received data symbols using the following metric. Thus obtained likelihood is utilized as a soft decision value to determine the data bits for each of the received data symbols for subsequent decoding.
