A character rendering device includes: first drawing means for dividing a shape of a character represented by character shape data into partial areas, and rendering the shape of the character area by area; second drawing means for rendering the character on the basis of the shape of the character drawn by the first drawing means; transfer means for transfering the character rendered by the second drawing means; first storing means for storing data; second storing means whose read/write rate is lower than that of the first storing means, and whose storage capacity is larger than that of the first storing means; and selection means for, if a number of the partial areas created by the first drawing means is equal to or smaller than a threshold value, selecting the first storing means, and if the number of the partial areas is larger than the threshold value, selecting the second storing means, and if the first storing means is selected by the selection means, the first drawing means writes data of the rendered shape of the character in the first storing means, and the second drawing means reads out the data of the shape of the character from the first storing means and renders the character on the basis of the shape of the character, and if the second storing means is selected by the selection means, the first drawing means writes data of the rendered shape of the character in the second storing means, and the second drawing means reads out the data of the shape of the character from the second storing means and renders the character on the basis of the shape of the character.
