<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head for laser welding which enables a spot weld zone having an enough mechanical strength to be formed while facilitating adjustment of an optical system. <P>SOLUTION: In the laser welding head 27, when a planned weld line R of workpieces 10A, 10B is irradiated with laser beam through cooperation of cylindrical lenses 51, 52, a laser beam L supplied from a laser beam source 40 can be converged in an elliptical shape in advance, the elliptical shape having a major axis in an X direction orthogonal to the planned welding line R and a minor axis in a Y direction along the planned welding line R. As a result, the planar shape of the spot weld zone W to be formed becomes nearly a complete roundness, fully ensuring mechanical strength of the spot weld zone W. In addition, in the laser welding head 27, the alignment of the converging position P of the laser beam L can be performed by merely adjusting the arrangement position of a plano-convex lens 53 along the optical axis direction of the laser beam L.
