An apparatus for generating a 3D holographic display comprises a display device 107 which consists of a housing 504 with a viewing aperture 108. A coherent light source 501, such as a laser, directs light 505 upon a modulating device 502. Modulating device 502 is controlled to modulate the phase of the incident light to produce phase-modulated light 506. Means 503 are provided to direct the modulated light to a viewing position. A processing device (101,109, figure 1) serves to manipulate three-dimensional object data with respect to given viewing positions in order to calculate, two-dimensional holographic image data relating to those positions. Light is phase-modulated according to the viewing position such that, when the viewing position is changed, the phase-modulation is altered accordingly to enable the viewer to appreciate an alteration in the perceived 3D perspective shown by the holographic display. |
