A refrigerator and a controlling method thereof are provided to extend the lifespan of dispenser driving parts by discharging ice and water via the dispenser according to a priority when the switches thereof are manipulated simultaneously or at regular intervals. A method for controlling a refrigerator includes the steps of determining which switch is manipulated first between a water supply switch and an ice supply switch(S10,S20), and controlling the water supply valve to be opened for supplying water to a dispenser when the water supply switch is manipulated first and then the ice supply switch is manipulated(S30).
