This invention provides an alkaline battery containing manganese dioxide and nickel oxyhydroxide as a positive electrode active material. The percentage weight reduction of manganese dioxide upon heating in the temperature range of 100°C to 400°C is not less than 3.8% by weight. When this manganese dioxide is analyzed by powder X-ray diffractometry, the peak position of a diffraction face having Miller indices of (110) is not less than 20.5 degrees and not more than 21.7 degrees. At the same time, the ratio of peak intensity I(130) of a diffraction face having Miller indices of (130) to peak intensity I (021) of a diffraction face having Miller indices of (021), i.e., I(130)/I(021), is not more than 0.1.
