PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a portable telephone set to include illumination and emergency illumination functions and a call arrival emission function accompanied with a change in look. SOLUTION: A call arrival illumination apparatus for mobile equipment notifies a user of call arrival and is characterized in comprising: a light emitting diode 20 which is positioned in a transparent portion on a casing of the mobile equipment and emits light in call arrival or illumination; a polymer dispersion liquid crystal 203 which shifts into cloudy state or transparent state depending upon whether a voltage is applied or not, scatters light from the light emitting diode in the cloudy state to light up a position around the mobile equipment, or suppresses scattering of light from the light emitting diode in the transparent state to illuminate a position away from the mobile equipment through the transparent portion of the casing; and a call arrival illumination control section 302 which judges whether illumination setting or call arrival setting is selected, emits the light emitting diode when the illumination setting or the call arrival setting is selected, further, shifts the polymer dispersion liquid crystal into transparent state when illumination setting is selected, or shifts the polymer dispersion liquid crystal into dispersion state when call arrival setting is selected.
