The step-negotiable wheelchair, with a main wheel (11) connected to each of two rotatably mounted main axles (10), has per main axle at least one first braking device (15), and at least one second braking device (17) which are functionally independent of each other. At least one blocking device is associated in each case with each main wheel. The first braking device of each main axle brakes the respective main axle in the non-operated state and releases it in the operated state. The second braking device blocks the main axle in one rotational direction and releases it in the other. An independent claim is included for an axle braking system for an axle of a wheelchair.
