[Also in Division D1] The invention comprises sulphonic acid groupcontaining compounds which contain 2 to 10 recurrent structural units of formula wherein R 1 represents hydrogen, an alkyl radical which contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms and which may be substituted, or an aralkyl radical; R 2 represents hydrogen, an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group, or a halogen atom; R 3 represents hydrogen or a methyl group, n is a number between 0À7 and 2; and the alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium and amine salts thereof. These compounds are prepared by treating a condensation product which contains 2 to 10 recurrent structural units of the formula in which R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are the same as above, optionally dissolved in inert organic solvents, with a sulphonating agent in such amount that 0À7 to 2 sulphonic acid groups are apportioned to each unit of the condensation product and optionally neutralizing the free sulphonic acid. In the examples iso-nonylphenol, iso-dodecyl phenol, p-cresol and p-cyclohexyl phenol are reacted individually with divinyl-benzene or di-isopropyl-benzene to obtain the condensation products which are sulphonated to produce the sulphonic acid groupcontaining compounds.
