An apparatus for recognizing a separation distance is provided to enable a driver to recognize a separation distance from a vehicle correctly through a size of a remaining image of a projected body by projecting a light from an optical illumination unit to a surface of the projected body. An apparatus for recognizing a separation distance includes an optical illumination unit(1), a rotation driving unit(3), and a control unit(5). The optical illumination unit illuminates a light. The rotation driving unit drives rotatably and repeatedly the optical illumination unit at a predetermined rotation angle so that a size of a remaining image which is illuminated from the optical illumination unit to a projected body, and a separation distance between the optical illumination unit and the projected body are set to an equimultiple ratio. The control unit controls an operation of the optical illumination unit and the rotation driving unit. The rotation driving unit has a step motor which rotates the optical illumination unit repeatedly at a predetermined angle.
